Mended Murals by Vaseline

Vaseline believes that all skin deserves to be celebrated and seen.
But if everybody doesn’t have proper representation or access to health care, this can’t be achieved. Mended Murals was created to shed light on the importance of caring for skin of color and increase access to skin health resources.

About the project
Vaseline has a long-standing mission to make skin health care more equitable and accessible to all communities. By 2025, the brand will enable 15 million people of color to access more equitable skin health care. Through Mended Murals, they partnered with local artists to restore their murals and are supporting local charitable clinics that provide accessible health care. As part of a commitment to drive skin health equity, they donated a total of $250,000 to charitable clinics that offer accessible health care in each U.S. city where a mural is restored.

Murals

African in America
by
Ernest Shaw

I always want to create art where people of color can find their humanity somewhere in the imagery.
That’s at the forefront of most of my creations so that’s one of the main purposes of this wall.”
- ERNEST SHAW

ABOUT THIS MURAL
Ernest Shaw’s mural, African in America, is an updated version of the wall local to Baltimore community members at the intersection of North and Asquith. Through Mended Murals, Ernest took the subjects of his art, the African mother, the drummer, and bring the youths to the forefront in a modern-day lens. Baltimore’s “Squeegee Kids” have been a regular theme in his art in recent years, and they come to the center of this mural, in the middle of the neighborhood they are most known to.

Gods That Walk Among Us by ROBERT VARGAS

“Just getting to touch up this piece and keep it alive as long as I can is the best thing I could ask for. So, I'm really appreciative of this whole project. When people get to see a refreshed and a new life, it brings the whole magic back to when it was first created.”
- ROBERT VARGAS

Star Gazing
by Corey Pane

“Getting to touch up this piece and keep it alive as long as I can is the best thing I could ask for. When people get to see a refreshed painting given a new life, it brings the whole magic back to when it was first created.”
- COREY PANE

ABOUT THIS MURAL
Set on Asylum Street in the heart of Hartford, Corey Pane’s Stargazers mural intends to inspire young people of the community to dream and to create. The mural depicts the artist’s own family and close friends in various artistic pursuits. Flowers Of The Empire
by ROBERT VARGAS

“It’s so important for this Bushwick community to see art that represents all people of color. Personally, I love doing large scale portraits of people who look just like me. At the same time, I love all people, and to celebrate and champion them.”
- ROBERT VARGAS

THIS MURAL
Robert Vargas’ mural Flowers of the Empire is located just two blocks from his other mural in Bushwick, but has a very different message. The mural is inspired by three siblings he met while painting in Bushwick, and the three faces represent the past, the present, and the future in this community. These are the flowers of the community that must be protected, nurtured, and watered so that they can grow to be strong and confident.
